12) “The concept of citizenship and gender equality” workshop, Beirut, August 2016

Within the program of “Capacity building in the concept of citizenship and gender equality” in 2016, and to continue the plan started and achieved during 2014 and 2015; the Citizenship and Gender workshop was organized in Raouché Arjaan by Rotana in Beirut, Lebanon, between the 5th and 7th of August, 2016, supported by EuroMed Feminist Initiative IFE-EFI. This workshop aimed to enable the experiences of activists and to develop their skills and knowledge in areas related to the concept of citizenship and their values.

The training was led by Dr. Hassan Abbas – Citizenship issues and values. Firas Dahi – The concept of citizenship; “participatory” as one of the four citizenship principles. Wissam Jalahej – citizenship principles, continued; freedom and equality. Sabah Hallaq – citizenship principles, continued: equality, citizenship, and gender.

The workshop aimed to enable activists in the society; men and women, as well as activists in civil society organizations, to deepen their knowledge in the concept of citizenship, its basis, values, and issues, as well as the link between citizenship and gender.
The total number of participants in this workshop was 19, men and women, among which 8 resided in different areas, 6 in Bukaa and 5 in Beirut, they all came from various civil society organizations and they represent actors in the society including in press, and individuals from organizations working in the refugee camps in Lebanon.

 

The objectives of the workshop:

The first objective: introducing to participants, the concept of citizenship adopted by Citizenship League.

The second objective: introducing the four principles of citizenship (Participatory, freedom, responsibility, and equality).

The third objective: introducing the four values of citizenship (Public morality, civic awareness, solidarity, and humanity).

The fourth objective: introducing some of the citizenship issues (Diversity, civil society, identity, and gender).

Training methodology followed, mainly, an interactive way through asking questions about the topics that were presented in each session, and using brainstorming technique, and through groups work to engage participants after ideas about citizenship concept, basis, values, and issues.
