The knowledge program
More than ever before, citizenship has become a fundamental concept for building a country as a homeland for all its citizens. Especially after the damage caused by the current crisis in different countries in the region; weakening of the state, the collapse of the social fabric and the destruction of the unifying national space.
For the past 5 decades, the region did experience a unique form of oppression under which the concept of citizenship was excluded from education and social and political life in the country; something that we would not be exaggerating to consider as one of the reasons for where things are today. Surveys and discussions we carried out have shown that most people do not understand the true meaning of citizenship including those who flaunt it as the slogan of the future state.
The League, therefore, and through its knowledge program, finds it necessary to work seriously and quickly to put out educational and cultural publications that contribute in introducing the concept of citizenship and related issues to different slices of the society.
The League promotes, in this regard, several projects, of which the most important are:
This project saw the light at the end of March of 2016 where the League published the theoretical section from (Citizenship Handbook) in Arabic and English, issued by “bait elmouwaten” for Publishing and Distribution, and with the support of the Dutch organization “HIVOS”.
The League developed this Handbook project approximately 2 years ago, and applied its materials in its workshops; the concept of citizenship, its basics, values and issues. The League benefited from the many discussions that took place during these workshops to modify its vision of many topics included in this Handbook. It also benefited from the practical experiences of these workshops in the formulation of the applied section of the Handbook that a team from the League is working to complete and issue as soon as possible.
The League does not claim to include in this Handbook the mechanisms to build citizenship relations, and it doesn’t seek to outline the form of citizenship in the future, but trying to contribute in providing the necessary knowledge to fulfil the dream of building a state of citizenship.
As the League is proud of this achievement today, at the same time, hopes to have provided a clear working Handbook that will help citizens to apply for citizenship in the various areas of their lives. The League affirms, more and more today, its rooted conviction, and its faith in its original motto:
“Citizenship is the Answer”
The Handbook was prepared by a team of researchers; they are (by Alphabetical order): Hassan Abbas, Sabah Hallaq, Marianna AlTabaa, Wesam Jalahej. The technical implementation was done by Fayez Allam.
The book is distributed for free and can be downloaded (English version) via the direct link: Citizenship Handbook
