16) “Citizenship concept” workshop – February, 2017

Citizenship League believes that the lack of citizenship culture, and the absence of knowledge on citizenship, human rights, and gender equality in the education system, at all levels, is one of the main reasons that resulted in the region’s current situation. Therefore, the League, since its foundation, started focusing on disseminating the culture of citizenship, human rights and gender equality between citizens, through many programs and projects, such as knowledge program, enabling program, transitional justice program, training for lawyers on Human rights, and training to enable refugees in Lebanon to fight against sexual violence.

Within the work frame of the enabling program, “Citizenship is the answer”, and in continuation of the program plan implemented in 2014, 2015, and 2016, the second workshop about “citizenship concept” was held in Hotel Raouché Arjaan –Rotana, Beirut, between the 24th and the 26th of February, 2017, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

The workshop was organized by the SL4C coordination team, and a number of participants who attended the training for trainers program in 2016, contributed to facilitating the sessions of this workshop. The trainers of the workshop were: Dr. Hassan Abbas (Introduction to citizenship, citizenship history, and concept, principles of citizenship: participation), Mr. Hinad Alshahef (principles of citizenship: freedom), Ms. Sabah Alhallaq (principles of citizenship: equality), Ms. Farah Abou Assaly (Principles of citizenship: responsibility, conditions to achieve citizenship), Ms. Hala Khdeir (citizenship values – potential citizenship and active citizenship).

18 participants, including 13 women, attended the workshop; they were all selected from various civil society organizations, actors, and from different specializations including medicine, law, media, literature, economics, architecture, etc… During the second day of the workshop, a dialogue session with Dr. Maher Aboumayaleh – the director of health program in Aga Khan Foundation – was held, where he talked about the effects of the disaster on health situation, and he mentioned their primary causes (pre-war), and the cumulative secondary causes (post-war).
